Metal Monsters of Borrego Springs
Places
From magical serpents to giant scorpions and eagles, the amazing metal sculptures created by artist Ricardo Breceda spread across the landscape of Galleta Meadows in southern California's Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. There are over 130 metal sculptures to explore.
Breceda's 7-year old daughter was his inspiration for the sculptures when she asked him to make her a life-sized dinosaur for Christmas after watching Jurassic Park 3. Fate had bigger plans for Breceda. He had just set up a small store in Perris, California, called "Perris Jurassic Park" where he met Dennis Avery, of the Avery office supply brand.
Avery owned three square miles of land right outside Anza-Borrego, and it was his vision to create a free-standing art gallery for all to enjoy. In 2008, Mr. Avery and Ricardo struck up a deal to create 133 magical mythical metal sculptures of spectacular scale and install them at what would be known as Galleta Meadows Estate. Mr. Avery was able to enjoy seeing his vision come to fruition before his death in 2012.
When asked in an interview which sculpture was his favorite, Ricardo answered, "I don't know, I haven't made it yet."
