Spencer was also a successful racer, with many Class 7 wins during the 1980s, highlighted by a twenty year career as a Nissan factory driver. He was the back-to-back recipient of the SCORE/HDRA Toyota True Grit Award in 1985 and 1986. For decades, Spencer Low Racing (SLR) was synonymous with excellence, innovation and winning in the off-road racing community.

After retiring from full-time competition, Spencer was a color commentator for ESPN and Prime Network, covering televised SCORE/HDRA, SODA and Pikes Peak events alongside legendary commentators Marty Reid and Jerry Garrett.

Although retired from full-time participation following a long, successful career, Spencer returned to the sport he loved in 2017, placing second in class at the 50th Anniversary running of the NORRA Mexican 1000, piloting his championship-winning 1988 Nissan Hardbody in the Challenger Class.

In 2018, Spencer returned to NORRA, taking the overall Challenger Class win, starting 240th and finishing 17th overall, and taking home the coveted Manny Esquerra trophy. Spencer also won first place in the Vintage Open Class at the 50th Anniversary Mint 400.

Spencer was a founding member of the Tread Lightly movement, never missing an opportunity to give back to the sport of off-road. He participated in press conferences, speaking engagements, interviews, promotions, and represented his sponsors at such high-profile events as the Tokyo Motor Show, the North American International Auto Show, the Los Angeles Auto Show and at SEMA.

Spencer Low passed away in 2019.
